The subject matter of the book really lent itself to the design you see here. I developed the image under the universal premise of how the world invisions a social media icon, inturn creating instant branding. Within this framework, white space was essential in keeping the cover clean and crisp, allowing the blues to really pop.
Fortunately for me, the core of this design was actually my initial effort with subsequent tweaking here and there for the final product. As is the case with all my designs, other options are always presented to the client, each of which have their own merrit. The initial color scheme for one was more of an aqua marine blue which in the end fell flat and wasn't as strong as the blue seen here. A number of variations of the icon were also considered - a small 'r' for one, but this didn't have the punch that the big 'R' has. Also, the positioning of the icon - straight up and down versus a 45 degree angle. In this case, the angled position provided more of a visual interest. Each element, whether it be type or image, needs to work with the other in order to create a cohesive piece. Check out my design blog for a more detailed look at the design process. |
